The sportscotland Lottery Fund awarded £1.5 million towards the project, which opened in March 2003. The centre, in one of Glasgow’s largest housing estates, includes an indoor sports hall, dance studio, fitness suite and changing facilities. The new facilities were an addition to the swimming pool and the pitches, which were already in great demand by the community.

Who gave the money?

sportscotland lottery fund

What was the grant programme?

Sports Facilities Programme, now the Building for Sport Programme

How much was given?

£1.5 million

Where is the project located?

Drumchapel, Glasgow

Why was this project so good?

The leisure centre uses a number of environmentally friendly techniques. It features dynamic insulation as part of the heating and ventilation, recycling the games hall’s ventilation in the changing rooms and shower areas, and uses condensing boilers. All these are geared to reduce revenue costs and create a healthier environment.

Sport brings positive benefits to communities particularly among young people, helping them build social skills and providing positive alternatives in life. Facilities such as these give more people the incentive to adopt healthy, active lifestyles, which in the longer term create a fitter Scotland.
